Reverence Her Husband

Ephesians 5
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

"love his wife"

"she reverence her husband"

I learned the truth of this many years ago. My husband and I were not in a good place in our marriage. Things were so bad that if we hadn't started our marriage with "divorce is NOT an option," we very well may have gotten a divorce.

You see, I entered our marriage a feminist. Granted, my feminist ways were already breaking down (I took his last name), I still had a long way to go.

I was controlling (or tried to be anyway), I thought I knew better (I was the one with the degree), and I had a "right" to be happy.

When things got really bad, I cried out to God to show me where we had gone wrong. I sought godly from my pastor's wife and I studied what the Bible had to say.

What I discovered was that I was tearing down my own house ("Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands." ~ Proverbs 14:1).

I did not show Chad respect in many ways which caused him to not love me. This caused me to respect him less which caused him to show less love. It was just a vicious cycle that needed to stop.

I struggled with the fact that I was going to have to take the first step (why should it be me, right?), but it was what God was calling me to do.

There were many times I had to bit my tongue. There were many times I submitted even though I thought we were making a mistake (guess what--I was usually wrong!). There were many times I was only outwardly obedient ("fake it 'til you make it"). However, it worked! Imagine that, God's way worked!

Chad started showing me love which helped me respect him more which caused him to show more love which caused more respect. It was the same cycle as before, but in reverse.

We have had comments from people who knew me well before marriage about how I've changed. Some have asked Chad how he changed me. Thankfully, Chad is quick to tell them it was God who changed me!

I have hard the book Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs is a good book and from my understanding is about the same things I discovered years ago.

All I can say is that this is an important concept to understand in a marriage. It saved my marriage and helped us grow to where we are today--a strong, loving, respectful marriage.

I would love for you to share your thoughts!

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

Philippians 4:6
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

"[I]n everything" we are to give thanks. We are to be thankful even in times of trials. Even when we are suffering we are to be joyful. Why? Because you can not be joyful and full of self-pity and anger at the same time.

There is always something to be grateful for in your life. Foster a life of gratitude and thanksgiving and you will have less bitterness.

I've written before about Ann Voskamp's book, One Thousand Gifts and how I journaled my 1000 gifts (here and here). I heard of another way to catalog gratitude--The ABC's of Gratitude (looking back at my blog I saw that I did an ABC's of Thanksgiving 5 years ago). Try to make a list every day (or every week) and find something to be grateful about for each letter of the alphabet.

A--Allyn
B--Brother (Jim)
C--Cora
D--Dara
E--Eva
F--Ford (my son, not the company!)
G--God's Word
H--Hava
I--In-laws
J--Jaina
K--Kitchen (both in my house and the new summer kitchen!)
L--Long time friends
M--Martha
N--Nature
O--One flesh (Chad!)
P--Parents
Q--Quiet mornings
R--Reading books
S--Sabra
T--Tissa
U--Ultimate sacrifice (Christ's blood!)
V--Vegetables
W--Womb
X--X-tra beautiful sunsets
Y--Yahweh
Z--Zion (Biblical)

Something Said

Our family participates in Bible Bee every year. This year, we are studying the first six chapters of John. Chad will be preaching on the same chapters. This week he started with John chapter 1--Something Said.

Exceedingly Abundant

Ephesians 3:20
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Have you ever prayed for something and God exceeded your expectations? Why does He do that?--Because He can and because He loves us!

Many times when we (my husband & I) pray about something, we think about the ways God may choose to fulfill those prayers. More often than not, God chooses a way that never even  crossed our minds and answers the prayer in abundance.

One example: Many years ago, our oldest daughter was in need of some clothes (she of course didn't have hand-me-downs). We prayed about it and tried to figure out how to get the money to buy her some (this was before I started sewing). God answered our prayers abundantly when that night we arrived at church and a new family that had been attending asked us if we could use some girls' clothes. They gave us three large garbage bags full of clothes in her size and larger; she was set for a few years! God went exceedingly, abundantly above our expectations!

Thoughts For You

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

This is a well known scripture. Growing up, I used the NIV so that is how I originally learned it,
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ~ Jeremiah 29:11(NIV)

but I have been using a KJV for over two years and as I read it again in KJV, I saw something I hadn't before.

"Thoughts" vs. "plans". Plans tells me that what is happening in my life is God ordained. Thoughts tells me that God only wants what is good for me and that even though I may be experiencing the consequences of bad choices on my part, He still wants what is best for me. As a parent, I know and understand that suffering consequences is sometimes (usually) best so that we learn from our mistakes. Those who are shielded/protected from consequences are doomed to repeat the mistakes.

God only wants the best for us and will take even hard times and turn them for good.

Romans 8
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Another meaning of the Hebrew word for "thoughts" is purpose. God has a purpose for our lives and will bring it about. He desires for us to experience a peaceful life and we must rememeber that He is the God of Peace.

Philippians 4
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

We can only know true peace through Him.

Philippians 4
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Love for God

Luke 10:27-28
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

We are to love God with all that we are and all that we have. One way to show our love for God is to love others--everyone. We do not need to love their sin, but we should love them enough to care about their eternity.

Bible Journaling

I heard about Bible Journaling at some point within the last few months. I started following a facebook page for Bible Journaling administered by Darlene Schacht of Time-Warp Wife. I have become more and more intrigued with the idea.

There are journaling Bibles available for purchase or even a Bible with an extra-wide margin would work, but if you don't have one of those Bibles and don't have the money to run out and purchase a new Bible, then journaling on paper is a good way to get started.

I have never been very creative and my drawing skills have always lacked, but I enjoy good art. I can often see something in my mind, but putting it down on paper is always a different story. That being said, I wanted to give it a try.

My first attempt was during a Wednesday night Bible study while studying faith (yes, I continued to listen as I drew!). It didn't turn out exactly how I imagined it and it is on lined paper, but you get the idea.

My second attempt was one morning during my Bible time. I used a much smaller piece of paper so the alignment isn't the greatest, but I liked how it turned out more than my first attempt.

Needless to say, I am going to keep trying and probably invest in some color pencils and such to add color to my Bible journaling as well.

Do you Bible journal? Are you interested in starting? I would love to hear your thoughts and even see some of what you've done if you already enjoy it.

30 Minute Skirt

Jaina is happy with her new skirt!
I discovered that Jaina was still short on some outfits. She had a shirt that fit and wasn't stained, but no skirt that matched it. I knew I needed to make another skirt.

It only took a 1/2 hour to cut the material and sew it together. It is a simple design.

I took her waist measurement and cut the top material to 1 1/2 times her waist measurement. You could just do that and cut it to the length you desire (plus hem), but I decided to make it a two tiered skirt so she would have more room to run. For the second tier, I took 1 1/2 times the measurement of the top piece of material. I then gathered the second tier and then sewed it to the top tier. I then sewed the entire side seam making sure I lined up the seam where the tiers are sewn together. I then hemmed the bottom and made a casing for the elastic at the top. Finally, I added the elastic.

Again, the material, thread, and elastic were all items I had "in stock". I love being able to clothe my family without spending a fortune or a lot of time.

Do you sew for yourself or your family? I would love to hear about some of your projects-comment below!

Finding Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13-18
Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Remember yesterday when I discussed how we should seek wisdom just like we search for treasure? Well, it is continued here in chapter 3 of Proverbs.

Wisdom is better than money! It is better than all riches! Nothing can compare to the goodness of wisdom! Wisdom will give long days of life, pleasantness and happiness.

I've been told that wisdom (in the book of Proverbs) is personified to represent Christ. I don't know if that is what Solomon meant when writing this, but it does make sense. Try reading this section again, but put 'Christ' in every time the word wisdom (or its pronoun) is used.

Happy is the man that findeth Christ, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of Christ is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. Christ is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto Christ. Length of days is in Christ's right hand; and in Christ's left hand riches and honour. Christ's ways are ways of pleasantness, and all Christ's paths are peace. Christ is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon Christ: and happy is every one that retaineth Christ.

Search for Treasure

Proverbs 2:4
If thou seekest her [wisdom] as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

In today's society, the push for most people is to be rich. They also want it the easiest way possible; the least work they can do, the better. However, if they know there is a "treasure" hidden somewhere, they will exhaust themselves trying to find it.

Imagine you have a lotto ticket with the winning numbers for $1,000,000, but you can't find it. Won't you turn your house upside down looking for it?

God tells us we should search for wisdom just as we would that ticket. We should do whatever it takes  to find wisdom. When we do search for wisdom, then we will find God and He will give wisdom!

Proverbs 2:5-6
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Lighten Burdens of Others

Galatians 6
2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

As Christians we are called to help one another. We should do all we can to help lighten the burdens others carry. When we do that, we are fulfilling the law of Christ--Love.

We would want others to help us in our times of needs, so we need to be aware and ready to help when we see others in need. We should strive to make it a goal to put the needs of others before our own desires and wants.

May we "do good unto all men."

Lilla Rose 72 Hour Sale!

You can go to my page to order!

Love Thy Neighbor

Galatians 5:13-14
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

We are not bound by the Mosaic law anymore because Christ came and fulfilled the law. However, that does not mean we should just ignore it.

The law is fulfilled by love. "Love your neighbor as yourself." If you truly live by love, then you will strive to keep the law--not to earn salvation, but because of the salvation you have already received and to show love to others.

Tell the Truth

Galatians 4:16-18
Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

True friends love you which means they love you enough to tell you the truth even though it may be something you really don't want to hear. It doesn't make them your enemy, but it shows their true love for you. ("Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." ~ Proverbs 27:17)

There will be people in life who try to turn you from your beliefs and convince you that they are right, but if what you believe is true, you should stick with truth.

God's Word is true! There are definitely people who try to twist or change it to fit their desires. Stand firm on Truth!

Gluten Free Scottish Pancakes

I never remember to take photos until after we've eaten some!
Here is seconds for someone.
A few weeks ago I was searching for something on Pinterest and saw a pin for Scottish pancakes. Since my husband is Scottish, I thought I would pin it to try at some point. Well, that point was Saturday!

I had to change the recipe some to make it gluten free, but everyone liked these Scottish pancakes better than my "regular" pancakes. One girls said they tasted like french toast. Another said like waffles. In any case, they won the Carmichael family approval!

You can see the original pin here. Here are my adaptations.

I quadrupled the original recipe for my family of 12. Since one daughter is missing, we fed 11, but had just the perfect amount left over to feed 12 for when we have everyone home.

6 1/2 cups gluten free flour blend
1 tablespoon xanthan gum (I'm sure you could omit this if your blend already has it)
4 tablespoons baking powder
a few pinches of salt
4 tablespoons evaporated cane juice crystals
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
4 large eggs
5 cups milk

Combine flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, salt, evaporated cane juice crystals, and cinnamon. In another bowl, whisk eggs until foamy. Add milk and whisk again. Add to dry ingredients and whisk until combined. Let sit for 15 minutes. Add butter to a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Drop approximately 1/4 cup batter and cook until bubbles start to form. Flip over and cook until golden brown.

I hope you try these out and enjoy them as much as we did!

Another Sewing Day to Save Money

I switched to using cloth menstrual pads about 3 years ago (you can read about why I did here). Up until this point, I have used purchased cloth pads. Well, as my girls grow older, there are more and more of us using cloth pads and while we've been able to work with what we have, I know there will come a point when we will need more.

I've been wanting to try making my own for at least a year, but I haven't really had much time. I tried a few trials that work, but not the best (they are only used if all the others are still in the washer or dryer). Since I have had more time and I need to use up scrap material anyway, I decided to give some a shot today.

For the two smaller ones, I used a free pattern off a facebook group for sewing cloth menstrual pads. The larger one I created my own template using a pad I already own. The larger size is great for overnight or postpartum.  All the material came out of our scrap bins (yes, I have two bins of just scraps!), the thread was all thread that has been given to me (and I was able to use up some almost empty spools), and the velcro was also given to me. I actually prefer snaps, but the velcro was faster to use and free. While I can't speak about how well they will work, they look like they will work better than the few I tried making in the past.

Beginning of Knowledge

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:22
How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

One goal many people have is to become wise; however, they think they can attain wisdom outside of God. They will fail. Fearing God (respect, reverence, awe) is the only place to start. He created this world and everything in it so it only makes sense to start by studying Him and His Word.

How long will people try to do it by themselves? How long will they ignore true knowledge? Unfortunately, many people take delight in thinking they are wise and know "better" than God. They have no respect for God when they think they can do things better than how He created them. In the end (if not before), they will realize their foolishness. It all starts with Him!

Early Will I Seek Thee

Psalms 63:1-8
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

My favorite time to spend with the Lord is first thing in the morning. Part of this is because I am a morning person, but part of it is because I learned many years ago that I need to feed my soul first thing.

Often times people ask me how I can handle being a mother of a large family. To that I reply, "Only by the grace of God!"

When I first feed my soul, I find my day goes much smoother. If, for some reason or other,  I don't have my morning time with God, I can definitely expect problems to arise--usually my lack of patience or something on my end. Starting my day keeps me grounded.

It is because of His faithfulness that I continue to praise Him and continue to seek Him throughout the day. I am continually satisfied by His love.

Many times I am still meditating on what I've read or what He revealed to me at night as I lie in bed. I continue to seek Him and His ways. He has always been faithful to uphold me and guide me through my days. How can I not rejoice in Him?!

Sewing Day

My twins have been in need of a few clothing items due to just wearing out after being handed down a few times. I could just go to a thrift store and try to find things in their sizes, or I could use some of my abundant stash of material that has been given to us to make them a few items.

Jaina received a new skirt last month when one that Allyn made Tissa for her birthday was too big for Tissa (Allyn made another the correct size for Tissa), but she still needed a shirt to go with another skirt as the original shirt was too stained.

Excuse the not so great clarity as I used my iPad and
haven't learned how to take great pictures with it yet.
Martha needed more items. First, she had a dress that she didn't like wearing because the snaps would come undone very easily so I sewed the dress together up to the top four snaps. Second, she had a skirt that was made for another sister and handed down that was coming apart at one of the seams so I fixed that as well.

I don't know why this one is blurry.
The bottom 3-4 snaps would always come undone.

Next, we had a nice jumper that I had fixed the buttons on multiple times when an older sister wore it. I guess I did a good job the last time because instead of the button popping off, the jumper tore! I cut off the top part of the jumper and turned the bottom into a skirt for Martha.

Lastly, I made a dress for Martha as her favorite dress is on its last thread. It has been a favorite for three girls now and I have resewn the ties multiple times, fixed the zipper, and re-hemmed, but it is stained getting thin so it needs to go. Martha picked out the material, but I chose the pattern. The pattern I chose is the Pretty Peasant Dress by Squiggly Twigs Designs. It is the same pattern I used to make the shirt above for Jaina. I really like this pattern as it is simple to adapt to what material I have and the desires of my girls. Also, it is simple (and I've used it so much) that it is a quick sew.

She liked it so much she wanted to wear it today!
My  girls are now excited to have "new" clothes to wear. I'm excited because I didn't spend a dime (all thread, elastic, and ribbon we already had). I'm also excited to use some of our material stash as I really need to use it to make room for other things in the house.

I'm hoping to do more sewing this summer since we don't have a garden this year and I will have some extra time. I should get my girls busy helping me use of that stash of material, too. I also hope to either learn how to use the camera on my iPad better or borrow a camera from one of my girls (they have nicer cameras than I have!).

God's Family

Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

When we accept Christ as our Savior, we all become part of His family. We should no longer look at each other as "different", but as family.

It doesn't matter if we came from the "wrong side of the tracks" or if we came to salvation at a young age or even late in life--we are all part of His family. God does not look at those distinctions when He looks upon us. When He looks upon us, all He sees is His children--He loves us all the same.

Don't stress over the differences among His children. Accept and love all the same as He does.

Schoolmaster

Galatians 3:24
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Christ came to fulfill the law. We no longer need to perform animal sacrifices and such to come to God. Christ was/is the ultimate sacrifice!

Does that mean the Old Testament is no longer relevant--No! We still have much to learn from the Old Testament--even the old law.

How does someone know they are in need of a Savior, in need to be covered by Christ's blood--by the law! The law, especially the 10 Commandments, show us our sinful nature and shows us our need to be cleansed to stand before God.

The Way of the Master is a great witnessing program based on just this verse. I suggest checking it out.

Hebrews 10:1-10
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Feasts of Tabernacles

None Good

Galatians 2:16-17
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.
How do we receive salvation? Through faith in Jesus Christ. Nothing we do (outside of accepting His blood for cleansing our sins) can bring salvation. Our works do not justify our salvation or make us "good" ("there is none that doeth good, no, not one"~Romans 3:12).

Just as we are not saved by our works, we do not become sinless when we do accept Christ by faith. At some point (probably every day!), we will do a work that shows we are a sinner. Does that mean that we are not saved by Christ's blood?--NO!

Christ died for everyone--all sinners. He came and shed His blood so all would/could come to Him. He does not desire that anyone should perish.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Please God or Man?

Galatians 1:10
For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

For many years, I lived as a people-pleaser. Even after I first committed my life to Christ, I continued
to strive to please all people. However, the more I grew in Christ, the more I realized how wrong I had been.

It is my thought that living to please men is what heavily contributes to lukewarm Christianity (I wrote a post on lukewarm Christianity last month. You can read it here.) We start by slowly compromising God's Word in the name of "political correctness"). We can not be servants of Christ if we compromise His commands to "keep the peace". As a servant, we are to follow our Master's commands-no matter the cost.

Our blessing of striving to please God is not having the anxiety of wondering who I am hurting (because you can't please everyone all the time!). God will bless us in other ways, too, because He blesses the obedient.

God's Wisdom & Strength vs. Our Own

King Solomon sought God's wisdom to lead Israel when he first took the throne, but as he grew wealthier and stronger, he started relying on his own wisdom and strength.

Solomon's great-grandson, Asa, did the same thing (2 Chronicles 16:9).

It seems America is doing the same thing! Our nation became great because we were founded on godly principles and our leaders sought God's wisdom. However, our current and recent leaders are trying to rely on the nation's strength and worldly wisdom to move forward. We have lost God's blessings and if we continue on this path, we will see destruction.

A Quick Sewing Project

I discovered I needed new maternity clothes this time around due to 1. Most of my maternity clothes are really old and 2. Having lost 60 lbs since the last pregnancy, most of my maternity clothes were just too big. My problem is, however, that I am very frugal (therefore won't pay full price for maternity clothes) and that it is difficult to find used maternity clothing that not only fits, but meets my modesty standards.

One remedy to this is to sew my own clothes. However, there is a problem with that as well since most maternity patterns cost $20 or more and I don't like spending that much on just a pattern.

Another remedy is to take what you have and revamp it. I saw several ideas on pinterest of ways to take non-maternity clothing and adapt it into maternity clothing, however, that still involved me purchasing something new to work with. This really isn't a huge problem, but I just didn't feel like going out AGAIN to shop.

What I ended up doing is something I did once before--take an old maternity shirt that is stained or has a rip in it and turn it into a dress. This time, I had a shirt that had a stain on the bottom 1/3 of the shirt. I cut off the stained section and sewed on a "skirt". The last time I made on, I made ties. This time, I did a sash as I had seen a picture on pinterest with a sash and liked it. I was able to utilize some material given to me at one point for the "skirt" and sash so I had nothing but time into this project (because of course I have a large stash of thread as well!).

I also want to make myself a shirt (because I do have a couple of patterns that I found for a good price during previous pregnancies), but the material I really wanted to use, I just don't have quite enough to do the project. Since I am frugal, I am going to continue to look through my material stash to come up with an acceptable option.
