Insights Needed

Matthew 7:6 KJV
6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

I have to admit, this verse isn't clear to me. I can understand that we are not to "waste" our possessions, time, etc. on undeserving opportunities, but there has to be more to it that just that.

Do you have any insights? Please share!

  1. Hello Darcy! When I think of this verse I am reminded of Ray Comfort speaking of how to engage in evangelism (the 'that which is holy' and the pearls from this verse being analogous to the gospel). We can seek to share the gospel, seeking to see if the person is open to speaking of spiritual things. (His opening line is often 'Do you have a Christian background?') He describes it like being a bee, going from flower to flower seeking- if you have an opening, go for it, if not buzz off- saying that there is nothing wrong with moving on if the person is not open to spiritual talk.
This reminds me of Jesus in Galilee. When they despised him for his supposed familiarity to them, he shook the dust from his feet and moved on. Likewise the pattern of Paul in his ministry. An example being in Thessalonica, after experiencing hostility there he moved straight on to Berea.
This is just my initial reading of it. I might consult my Matthew Henry commentary and also look more at the context and come back later!
